Red Light Bangkok: Complete Area Guide
A complete guide to Bangkoks red light areas — Nana Plaza, Soi Cowboy, Patpong, and online options. Find out how each area works, what it costs, and which suits you.
New to Bangkok's nightlife scene? This guide covers every area — how each one works, what it costs, and which suits your budget and preference.
Quick Tips
- Bar fine has two parts: the bar fine (paid to the venue) + the girl's fee (negotiated directly with her) — always budget for both
- Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy are the two reliable agogo areas; Patpong has tourist trap risks
- Confirm both the lady drink price and the bar fine price at each bar before ordering anything
- Bring cash — most agogos do not accept cards; ATMs are available on Sukhumvit Road
- Grab or Bolt home — do not negotiate with tuk-tuks or unlicensed taxis after midnight on Sukhumvit

Overview: Bangkok's Adult Entertainment Areas
| Area | Format | Peak Hours | Lady Drink | Bar Fine (ST) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nana Plaza | 3-floor agogo complex (~30 bars) | 10pm–2am | ฿200–฿280 | ฿800–฿1,500 |
| Soi Cowboy | Open street agogos (~40 bars) | 9:30pm–1:30am | ฿180–฿260 | ฿800–฿1,200 |
| Patpong | Bars + night market (tourist-heavy) | 9pm–1am | ฿200–฿300 | Variable — see notes |
Nana Plaza — Largest Complex in the World
Nana Plaza is a three-storey U-shaped complex at the end of Sukhumvit Soi 4. It holds around 30 agogo bars spread across three floors, making it the largest adult entertainment complex in the world. Entry to the complex is free — each bar charges individually.
How it works: Agogo format with raised stages and rotating dancer lineups. Buy a lady drink (฿200–฿280) to sit with a girl; pay a bar fine to the bar cashier if you want to take her out, then agree her own fee directly with her.
Top bars: Rainbow 1 (ground), Rainbow 2 (second), Rainbow 4 (third), Obsession, Spanky's, Mandarin, Angelwitch
- Lady drink: ฿200–฿280
- Bar fine (ST): ฿800–฿1,500 | (LT): ฿1,200–฿2,000
- Girl's fee (ST): ฿1,500–฿3,000 (negotiate directly with her)
- BTS: Nana station — 5 min walk
Tip: Walk all three floors before sitting down — ground floor is busiest; upper floors are quieter. The atmosphere and lineup vary significantly between bars.
Soi Cowboy — Classic Bar Street
Soi Cowboy runs between Sukhumvit Soi 21 and Soi 23. It is a 150-metre street with around 40 agogos on both sides — more of an open bar-crawl experience than an enclosed complex. Generally considered slightly more relaxed than Nana Plaza, with marginally lower prices.
How it works: Same agogo format as Nana Plaza. Walk the full strip first, then settle into whichever bar appeals. Bar fine paid to bar cashier; girl's fee negotiated separately with her.
Top bars: Baccara (largest), Tilac, Long Gun, Shark Bar, Dollhouse, Suzie Wong
- Lady drink: ฿180–฿260
- Bar fine (ST): ฿800–฿1,200 | (LT): ฿1,200–฿1,800
- Girl's fee (ST): ฿1,500–฿2,500 (negotiate directly with her)
- BTS: Asok station — 5 min walk; MRT: Sukhumvit station — 3 min walk
Tip: Baccara is the biggest name and consistently busy, but also the most crowded. Try Tilac or Long Gun for a slightly more relaxed experience.
Patpong — Proceed with Caution
Patpong is the original Bangkok adult entertainment district (Silom area) and the one most tourists hear about first. However, it operates very differently from Nana and Cowboy and has significant risks for first-timers.
The "ping pong show" scam: Touts hand out menus showing cheap drinks (฿80–฿100 a beer). Once upstairs, you are presented with a bill for ฿5,000–฿20,000 with no way to dispute it. This is the single most common tourist financial trap in Thailand. Avoid any venue reached by walking upstairs via a tout.
The street-level bars on Patpong 1 and Patpong 2 are generally straightforward — open-fronted beer bars and standard go-go bars with normal pricing. The night market running through the middle is legitimate and safe.
What Patpong is good for:
- Daytime street food and the night market (safe)
- Street-level beer bars (fine, but pricier than elsewhere)
- Silom Soi 2 and Soi 4 nearby for gay bars and clubs
What to avoid: Any upstairs venue or show reached through a tout. If you can't see inside before entering, don't enter.
Full Cost Breakdown (Single Night, No Bar Fine)
| Expense | Estimate |
|---|---|
| BTS / transport to area | ฿50–฿120 |
| Beers (4–6 across the evening) | ฿600–฿900 |
| Lady drinks (2–3) | ฿500–฿800 |
| Grab/Bolt home | ฿80–฿200 |
| Total (no bar fine) | ฿1,230–฿2,020 |
Add ฿800–฿1,500 for a bar fine + ฿1,500–฿3,000 for the girl's own fee if applicable.
Safety Tips
- Never pay upstairs unless you could clearly see inside before entering — the Patpong scam is still active in 2026
- Check your bill before paying at every bar — double-charging is common across all areas
- Confirm prices upfront — lady drink cost and bar fine cost are both confirmed by any reputable bar before you order
- Bring cash — most agogos do not accept cards; ATMs on Sukhumvit Road charge ฿220 per withdrawal
- Use Grab or Bolt to get home — unlicensed taxis around Nana and Asok after midnight charge 3–5x normal rates
- SuperRich Thailand (Sukhumvit branches) offers the best exchange rates in Bangkok — far better than hotels, airports, or street-corner kiosks. Change baht here before heading out

FAQ: Red Light Bangkok
What are the main red light areas in Bangkok?
The three main areas are: Nana Plaza (Sukhumvit Soi 4, 3-floor agogo complex, ~30 bars), Soi Cowboy (between Sukhumvit Soi 21 and 23, open street, ~40 bars), and Patpong (Silom area, more tourist-facing with a night market, less agogo-focused). All three are agogo-format with bar fines.
How does a bar fine work in Bangkok?
A bar fine is paid to the bar to take a girl out. It covers the bars cost for "releasing" her for the evening. The bar fine is one part of the total cost — the girls own fee is negotiated separately and paid directly to her. Example: ฿250 lady drink + ฿1,000 bar fine + ฿2,000 girls fee = ฿3,250 all-in. Never confuse the bar fine with the girls fee — they are always two separate payments.
Is Nana Plaza or Soi Cowboy better for a first visit?
Nana Plaza has more bars in one place (3 floors) and is easier to compare many options quickly. Soi Cowboy is a more relaxed open-street format with slightly lower prices on average. For a first visit, Soi Cowboy is slightly less overwhelming. If you want the full Bangkok agogo experience in one venue, start with Nana Plaza. Ideally visit both — they are only two BTS stops apart.
What is Patpong like compared to Nana and Cowboy?
Patpong is more tourist-facing and less straightforward than Nana or Cowboy. It has a famous night market and several bars, but is known for tourist trap pricing and the notorious "ping pong show" scam (where you are shown a menu of cheap drinks, then charged ฿5,000+ at closing). Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy are significantly more reliable for a standard nightlife experience.
